Do you feel like you have a pooch who never stops sleeping? Don’t sweat it – we all do! In fact, most dogs sleep for over half of every day on average, and are only up and about for less than a quarter of the day. That means the average dog is kickin’ it on the couch for three quarters of their entire life… sign us up!
Many people feel like their dogs sleep way too much, and are worried that this is unusual behaviour. This is actually completely normal! The common dog will sleep for 14-18 hours a day. Anything less than this, and you may want to take them to the vet to get them checked up on.
Dogs sleep much more than humans do for many reasons, but mainly because they have very different sleeping patterns than we do. Dogs sleep much lighter than we do. In fact, they usually only reach REM sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. At this stage you will see your dog’s eyes flutter, legs kick, and hear them make subtle noises. They are dreaming at this stage and they do it far less than we do, so leave them be!
Since dogs sleep for much shorter periods of time, they must sleep far more often and more than we do. Remember to stay quiet while your dog is sleeping (if you can). Since dogs are much lighter sleepers than humans, they will arise upon the slightest of noises. Combine this with their stellar senses of smell and hearing, and it makes it tough for them to stay asleep for long.
Sleep tight, play fetch, and don’t let the fleas bite!
